Chuckanut Cans Are on the Way

It’s been a long time coming but Chuckanut Brewery is excited to announce that cans of Chuckanut beer are heading out to distributors and accounts as of January 9, 2025! The first beers will be the flagship Chuckanut Pilsner and Chuckanut Kolsch. This step is a culmination of a three year plus project that’s been on-going at Chuckanut Brewery at the Port of Skagit. The brewery building was more than doubled in size in the last two years.

After completion larger fermentation tanks were added and a Belgian washer/filler kegging machine was installed with a robotic arm. The six-head Codi canner from Colorado was set up the first of 2025 and Chuckanut’s brew crew has been busy filling cans since. Chuckanut Pilsner and Kolsch will go to distributors in the northwest counties of WA state (Dickerson Distributing), the Seattle-Tacoma region (NW Beverages), over to Spokane (Odom East) and Vancouver, WA (Craig Stein Beverages) and the greater Portland area and Oregon (Day One Distributors).

Once the crew becomes comfortable with the canning machine Chuckanut will begin adding a seasonal lager to the flagship beers. Later fall and winter will be Japanese Style Lager (an Asian style rice lager), Mexican Style Lager (light and crisp) for spring/summer and Fest Bier (the Oktoberfest favorite) for late summer/early fall. Hopefully small batch beers will be canned when time and supplies allow but that will be later. This is good news for all the Chuckanut fans as up to this point the cans were only available at Chuckanut’s outlets and a few select Co-Ops and bottle shops. Draft Chuckanut will still be available in more styles at draft accounts all around WA and OR.

The last step in the expansion at Chuckanut Brewery in Skagit is to hook up the small 10bbl system that was previously installed in the original Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen in Bellingham. That system was in storage and has slowly been reinstalled in the newly expanded space at the Port of Skagit. Once that is complete the system will be used for small batches and brewery collaborations with friends of Chuckanut. Stay tuned to social media and beer news for that completion, for now enjoy cans of Chuckanut wherever you might go whether on the water, in the forest, in the mountains or in the warmth of your home!

Chuckanut Brewery brews award winning Lagers and Ales and has won Large Brewery of the Year at WA Beer Awards 2017, 2019 and 2021 and Small Brewery at the GABF 2011 and 2009. The production facility and Tap Room in Skagit Valley is at 11937 Higgins Airport Way, Burlington, WA. Guests of all ages are welcome (including dogs) and there’s indoor and outdoor seating! Check out additional information about Chuckanut at chuckanutbrewery.com.

The Twisted Branch Out & Ron’s Not Bitter release

Garden Path Fermentation is excited to announce the official release of our newest edition of Ron’s Not Bitter. and our second edition of The Twisted Branch Out.–our take on a modern IPA!

Ron’s Not Bitter. is our riff on a classic English bitter, based on the recipe for one of Ron’s all-time favorite beers. But, instead of British malt and hops, mineral-rich water, and traditional English ale yeast, our version uses all locally grown ingredients, soft Skagit Valley water, and our house native yeast culture. So it’s very much like a bitter–except with totally different malt, hops, water, and yeast! This fourth edition is our favorite to date: smooth and crisp on the palate, with a complex body that belies its 4.2% ABV, perfect for a long pub session!

The Twisted Branch Out. is Garden Path’s take on a refreshing, intriguing modern-ish IPA. It was brewed on a crisp base of pilsner malt with a small portion of raw and malted wheat with late additions of Cascade and Cashmere pellets in the kettle and whirlpool, and fermented with our house native yeast culture. We then dry-hopped early in active fermentation to showcase the fruitier, tropical side of Yakima Valley whole leaf Cashmere and Cascade hops. This beer jumps out of the glass with aromas of peach, melon, mandarin orange, an unexpected yet familiar Garden Path grisette-like yeast character, and effervescent carbonation that brings you back for more.

Both beers are available this weekend at the Garden Path Fermentation tasting room, The Great Northern Bottle Shop & Lounge, and our online store, as well as through Walden Selections. We can’t wait to share them with you.

The Garden Paths Led to Flowered & The Wet Hopped Ship release

Garden Path Fermentation is excited to announce the official release of The Garden Paths Led to Flowered. (8th edition) and The Wet Hopped Ship. (5th Edition).

The Garden Paths Led to Flowered. may be the closest thing we have to a house beer. It was the first beer we ever released (on Friday, July 13th 2018), and–besides The Easygoing Drink.–the beer we’ve brewed the most. Every edition of Flowered is a hoppy foudre-fermented golden ale, a tribute to some of our favorite Belgian beers, and this 8th edition was dry-hopped with pelletized Saaz from Yakima and whole flower Saaz grown down the road at Hop Skagit.

Some of our native yeast culture, which we began cultivating in 2017, has been banked at Imperial Yeast in Oregon since 2018, and this batch of Flowered was fermented using a pitch from that original culture. It is also our first beer brewed using a majority of LINC malt from Spokane, WA, after the closure of our local maltster Skagit Valley Malting.

The beer is bright, crisp, refreshing, with a clean Saison nose, plenty of hops on the nose and palate, and just the slightest hint of tropical tartness. It’s exceptionally easy to drink, especially for a 7%+ beer, and probably our favorite edition yet!

The Wet Hopped Ship. is our 2023 fresh hop beer. We hand-harvested Perle, Willamette, and Mt. Rainier hops with our friends at Hop Skagit on 9/15/2023, added them to hot wort in our coolship that night, pitched our house yeast in the other half of the batch in an open foudre, combined them the next morning, and after primary fermentation in the foudre, aged the beer in oak until it was dry-hopped with the same whole-flower hops and packaged almost a year later on 9/23/2024.

Our process for The Wet Hopped Ship. may be unconventional–the hops are as fresh as possible, going into the wort within an hour of harvest, but the beer takes quite a bit of time to age and develop a rounded flavor profile. The end result is a smooth beer with a floral, herbal nose and a refershing, lightly tart, citrusy palate. It may not be the same as other fresh hop beers on the market, but it is uniquely a Garden Path product.

Both beers are now available at the Garden Path Fermentation tasting room, The Great Northern Bottle Shop & Lounge, and our online store, as well as through Walden Selections. We can’t wait to share them with you.

Chuckanut Beers for Winter 2024

The holidays are here, and winter is on our doorstep, that’s why Chuckanut Brewery is getting ready! Stronger flavored and darker colored beers are the best when enjoyed in front of a cozy fire and Chuckanut has beers coming out in November and December with just that request. First up will be Rye Lager, brewed with Rye malt for a more hearty and spicy flavored lager. Mexican Style Dark Lager is a darker rendition of Chuckanut’s regular Mexican Style Lager. The Dark Lager is deep amber in color with bigger malty flavors but the same crisp, bright finish as the regular Mexican Style Lager. For the first time this year Chuckanut has brewed its favorite Stout. Dark, full-bodied and rich, this export style Stout is sure to warm you up on a cold, wet day or night. And everyone loves Chuckanut Dunkel Lager with its chocolaty, coffeeish flavors and clean bright finish. But that’s not all, Chuckanut has brewed a new Citra Pilsner, slightly bigger and bolder in aroma and taste than the well-loved Citra Leaf Pilsner. This rendition uses the whole hop cone not just the leafy part of the hop plant. The cone holds more of the essence of this fruity, citrusy, spicy hop and imparts those flavors in the final pilsner pour.

Even though winter beers are sometimes darker and more full-flavored, Chuckanut makes sure they finish crisp and clean. This is a result of the Chuckanut methods of the brewing process and attention given to fermentation. Even though these darker beers have a bolder color you can rest assured the beers will be crispy.

Rye Lager is great with roasted meats and braised cabbage. If you are looking for something to pair with your enchiladas or mole chicken, pick the Mexican Style Dark Lager. And if you want a beer to pair with your stew, Chuckanut Stout will be perfect. Chuckanut Dunkel Lager is a hit with any dessert while the Citra Pilsner is the perfect pairing with coconut fish curry. Or if you just want to cozy up to the fireplace, pick any of the Chuckanut beers that are on tap in the South Nut Tap Room or your favorite pubs and restaurants. Heads up, Chuckanut just got a new 6-head canner and will introduce cans to the NW region in 2025, watch for them in stores and bottleshops!
