Skagit Valley Beekeepers maintain hives on Terramar’s property – here is a brief update from the keepers:
With increased temperatures the bees are becoming more active with some foraging on maples and filbert trees. They are still mostly in winter mode though. There is some pollen activity which means they are feeding the young but not yet in to full brooding season. The queen begins to start to lay in February for the start of summer bee production. We have been treating the hives monthly for Varroa mites which are a big problem everywhere for hive survival. Thus far all 4 hives are very active at the inside top where we have been feeding sugar to them all winter. Due to the lower temperatures we have not yet fully opened the hives for inspection.
